Dangote Expands Africa Energy Strategy with Planned Tanzania Refinery

Aliko Dangote has announced plans to build a new oil refinery in Tanzania, expanding his push to strengthen Africa’s refining capacity and reduce dependence on imported fuel across the continent.

The proposed facility will be located in Tanga and is expected to process crude oil from countries including the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan. The project is designed to serve as a regional energy hub for East Africa, supplying refined petroleum products to multiple countries.

Dangote made the announcement during a session at the Africa Finance Corporation summit in Nairobi, where he confirmed ongoing discussions with African leaders on a shared refinery model that would support regional energy needs. He said the project could be delivered within four to five years if supported by participating governments.

The new refinery plan builds on the operations of the Dangote Refinery in Lagos, which has already begun supplying gasoline and fertilizer to several African markets. The facility is also increasing its export reach as global supply chains continue to face disruptions.

Dangote added that exports from the Lagos refinery are increasingly being redirected within Africa to support West, Central, and East African demand. He also confirmed plans to expand the Lagos facility from 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day, which would make it one of the largest refineries in the world.

The expansion is backed by financing partners including the African Export-Import Bank and is expected to boost petrochemical production, particularly materials used in manufacturing.

If completed, the Tanzania refinery is expected to strengthen energy security in the region, reduce fuel import dependence, and support industrial growth across African economies by improving access to more stable and affordable energy supply.
