FG Approves New Allowance Increase to Improve Civil Servants’ Welfare in Nigeria

The Federal Government has approved an increase in allowances and welfare benefits for civil servants as part of efforts to improve income and working conditions across the public sector.

The announcement was made by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack, who stated that the decision forms part of broader reforms aimed at boosting productivity and staff welfare.

The review affects workers under major salary structures, including CONPSS and CONRAISS, covering employees across federal ministries and agencies.

Key allowances such as Duty Tour Allowance, estacode, and book allowance have been increased. Civil servants attending approved training will now receive full Duty Tour Allowance, even when the training takes place within their current location.

In addition to the allowance increase, the government has introduced a new exit benefit scheme for retiring workers and activated an Employee Compensation Scheme to support staff in cases of work-related injury or death.

The move comes amid rising living costs and ongoing pressure from labour groups for improved wages and welfare. Recent measures have also included salary adjustments and support initiatives at both federal and state levels.

Officials say the reforms are expected to improve financial stability for workers while strengthening overall performance in the public service.
