Environmental management firm ZLGA Waterways Limited, in collaboration with the Rural Women Energy Security Initiative (RWESI), has rolled out a nationwide training programme designed to equip two million rural women across Nigeria with practical knowledge in climate-smart agribusiness and renewable energy solutions.

The initiative, known as the Climate-Smart Agronomy Programme, seeks to empower women in rural areas with tools to adopt sustainable farming practices, cut carbon emissions, and build profitable green enterprises.

Programme Coordinator, Dr. Abiola Bashorun, announced in a statement on Thursday that over two million women have already registered for the training, which will be executed across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

“The Climate-Smart Agronomy Programme aims to empower rural women with hands-on skills in modern agriculture, renewable energy adoption, and environmental conservation,” Bashorun explained. “It focuses on resilience-building, livelihood improvement, and positioning women as key actors in the green economy.”

According to her, the programme will cover critical areas such as solar-powered irrigation, biogas production, and clean cookstove technologies, promoting energy efficiency and reducing dependency on fossil fuels while driving income diversification.

Bashorun noted that the partnership between ZLGA Waterways and RWESI will create new income opportunities, employment, and market access for women farmers while improving food security through climate-resilient agricultural systems.

“This initiative will enhance crop yields, reduce post-harvest losses, and improve soil health through environmentally sustainable practices,” she said. “We call on women of all ages and backgrounds to participate in this transformative journey toward environmental and economic empowerment.”

The collaboration was formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in Abuja earlier this week. Both organisations pledged to work alongside government agencies and local communities to expand the programme nationwide.

Bashorun reaffirmed that the project aligns with Nigeria’s national priorities on climate action, green growth, and food security, supporting the country’s efforts to build an inclusive and sustainable agricultural economy.

“We must act decisively to safeguard our environment and create a sustainable future for generations to come,” she emphasised.

The training initiative comes at a time when the Federal Government is advancing climate-smart agriculture through strategic national investments aimed at increasing food production, ensuring sustainability, and strengthening resilience against the effects of climate change.
