The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has announced that the National Identification Number (NIN) will now function as an automatic Tax Identification Number (Tax ID) for Nigerian citizens and residents. This policy shift is designed to simplify tax compliance processes and strengthen revenue administration nationwide.
The declaration, issued on Tuesday, highlights the federal government’s ongoing push to modernize the tax system, eliminate redundant processes, and improve the overall ease of doing business for individuals, startups, and enterprises operating in Nigeria.
With the new arrangement, any Nigerian who possesses a valid NIN will automatically be assigned a Tax Identification Number once the NIN is successfully verified by FIRS. This change removes the requirement for individuals and businesses to submit separate applications for tax registration, thereby reducing delays and administrative inefficiencies.
According to FIRS, “The integration of the National Identification Number with the Tax Identification system represents a major milestone in aligning identity management with tax administration. It simplifies taxpayer registration and promotes improved compliance across all sectors of the economy, including micro, small, and medium-sized businesses.”
FIRS officials explained that adopting NIN as the default Tax ID offers multiple benefits to individual taxpayers, entrepreneurs, startups, and MSMEs. These benefits include:

- Elimination of duplicate records, as taxpayers no longer need to apply separately for NIN and Tax ID.
- Faster and more seamless tax registration and compliance for businesses and self-employed individuals.
- Enhanced access to loans, grants, and government support programs that require verified tax identification as part of eligibility criteria.
The agency further noted that the initiative will improve transparency in tax administration, strengthen data management and analytics, and curb fraudulent practices associated with multiple or inconsistent tax registrations.
Owners of small and medium-sized enterprises are advised to confirm that their NIN details are accurate and properly updated with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC). Once validated, the NIN will automatically serve as the business owner’s Tax ID, removing the need to apply separately for a Tax Identification Number through tax offices.
Industry experts describe this integration as a major relief for MSMEs and startups, which often face challenges navigating complex registration and compliance procedures. By harmonizing identity and tax systems, the reform reduces both time and financial costs for entrepreneurs, allowing them to channel more energy toward scaling their businesses and driving innovation.
FIRS added that the policy is part of wider government reforms aimed at simplifying business registration, boosting revenue generation, and reinforcing Nigeria’s fiscal and regulatory framework.
As the country continues to embrace digital solutions to lower barriers to tax compliance, the adoption of NIN as the standard Tax ID represents a significant step toward improving engagement between individuals, businesses, and the national tax system.
