LASCOPA Resolves Over 10,000 Consumer Complaints, Recovers Over N530m for Lagos Residents

The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) has announced significant progress in safeguarding consumer rights, resolving over 10,450 complaints out of more than 11,100 cases received since its establishment in March 2018.

General Manager of LASCOPA, Afolabi Solebo, disclosed the figures during the agency’s inaugural Consumer Service Week and Award Ceremony held in Alausa, Ikeja. He revealed that the agency has facilitated recoveries worth more than ₦530.26 million and $14,901 across critical sectors, including electricity, banking, healthcare, telecommunications, logistics, hospitality, insurance, food and beverages, oil and gas, and the automobile industry.

Solebo explained that about 430 cases are still being processed, while around 200 have been referred to other relevant agencies for resolution. He stressed that beyond addressing complaints, the agency has intensified enforcement operations in supermarkets, retail outlets, and open markets to eliminate expired and hazardous products, thereby protecting public health and restoring consumer confidence.

“As Lagos continues to grow as a megacity and economic powerhouse, the agency remains committed to intensifying enforcement, embracing innovation, and deepening partnerships to meet emerging consumer challenges in a rapidly evolving marketplace,” he said.

LASCOPA is also broadening consumer education initiatives by collaborating with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), schools, trade associations, market leaders, and community groups. These efforts aim to empower Lagos residents to better understand and assert their consumer rights.

Highlighting the purpose of the event, Solebo said the Consumer Service Week and Consumer Appreciation and Award Day were created to celebrate excellence, transparency, and fairness while recognising stakeholders who have supported the protection of consumer rights in Lagos.

“Today, we are not only appreciating stakeholders but also reflecting on the remarkable progress we have made together in ensuring that Lagos remains a safe and fair marketplace for all,” he added.

He further called for stronger collaboration between government, the private sector, and consumers to build a business environment where consumer rights are respected, SMEs thrive on integrity, and residents enjoy safety, fairness, and value.

The event attracted government officials, business leaders, civil society organisations, and consumer representatives, all of whom commended LASCOPA for its progress and pledged to deepen partnerships that strengthen consumer protection and fair trade practices in Lagos State.
