Mastercard Teams Up with Smile ID to Transform Digital Identity and Boost MSME Growth Across Africa

Mastercard has expanded its collaboration with Smile ID, Africa’s leading digital identity verification provider, to accelerate the rollout of secure identity solutions across the continent. The strengthened partnership is set to unlock fresh opportunities for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) by enabling faster, safer, and more inclusive customer onboarding.

In a joint announcement on Thursday, both companies revealed that the initiative will empower banks, fintechs, mobile money providers, and small businesses to verify users swiftly and securely, curb identity fraud, and open greater access to formal financial services.

The agreement brings together Mastercard’s global identity expertise and technology with Smile ID’s advanced verification and fraud-prevention tools. Together, they aim to deliver instant onboarding across African markets, reinforce protection against synthetic identity fraud, and help businesses meet Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) obligations—areas where MSMEs often struggle with compliance.

Mastercard’s Executive Vice President for Services in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa described the deal as a pivotal milestone in strengthening digital trust and financial inclusion across Africa. She emphasized that fragmented identity systems have long stifled business expansion, locking millions—including MSMEs and informal traders—out of the digital economy. By embedding Smile ID’s technology into its ecosystem, Mastercard is working to create a safer and more inclusive digital environment where businesses of every size can thrive.

With Africa’s digital economy projected to hit $1.5 trillion by 2030, robust identity solutions are becoming essential for financial access, fraud prevention, and regional trade. For MSMEs, secure verification means fewer obstacles to obtaining credit, simplified compliance with regulatory standards, and expanded participation in digital marketplaces. The continent’s rapid smartphone adoption also makes seamless mobile-first identity solutions increasingly critical.

As part of the strategic move, Mastercard has acquired a minority stake in Smile ID, underscoring its long-term commitment to innovation and inclusion in Africa’s evolving digital ecosystem.

Smile ID’s co-founder and CEO highlighted the escalating risk of synthetic identity fraud, which costs African lenders and banks hundreds of millions of dollars each year. He explained that combining both companies’ technologies will empower financial institutions, mobile wallets, and digital platforms to confidently onboard the next 300 million users within seconds.

Through this alliance, Mastercard’s network of partners—including telecom operators, banks, fintech innovators, and MSME-focused platforms—will gain access to Smile ID’s powerful verification tools directly within Mastercard’s ecosystem. Smile ID’s partnerships with local governments and trusted data sources will also enable real-time verification across markets, simplifying cross-border operations and allowing small businesses to expand their reach.

Both organizations noted that the collaboration builds on Mastercard’s long-standing work with governments, companies, and communities to drive financial inclusion and economic growth. For MSMEs, this signals new opportunities ranging from seamless digital onboarding and fraud-proof transactions to the confidence needed to scale operations and attract more customers in a secure, fully compliant manner.
