MTN Group has strengthened its collaboration with Microsoft by successfully certifying more than 1,250 employees in cloud technologies—the highest number of certifications ever achieved by a Microsoft customer in Africa.
This milestone was reached through Microsoft’s Enterprise Skills Initiative (ESI) and forms part of MTN’s broader Project Nephos, the cloud transformation strategy launched in 2022. The project is designed to cultivate organization-wide expertise in cloud technologies, enhance operational efficiency, and accelerate innovation across MTN’s operating markets.
According to MTN, the training and certification programme spanned multiple disciplines, including Azure Fundamentals, Applications and Infrastructure, Data and Artificial Intelligence, Security, DevSecOps, and Data Management. Employees across various MTN subsidiaries benefited, from MTN Nigeria and MTN South Africa to the group’s specialist units such as Bayobab (its digital infrastructure business), its fintech division, and Chenosis, its API marketplace.

Group Chief Information Officer, Nikos Angelopoulos, hailed the rapid progress of the programme, describing it as “remarkable,” and emphasizing that the certifications are already deepening the company’s technical expertise while advancing its digital transformation journey.
Echoing this sentiment, Microsoft Account Director, Alkis Flemetakis, highlighted the significance of the collaboration, calling it “a critical enabler” of MTN’s long-term vision to develop digital platforms capable of driving Africa’s economic and technological transformation.
Looking ahead, MTN confirmed that it intends to broaden the programme’s scope by incorporating advanced-level certifications in fields such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and modern workplace solutions. This next phase is expected to further solidify the company’s evolution into a cloud-native, platform-driven organization.
