NEC Greenlights Nationwide Rollout of NASENI’s Solar-Powered Irrigation Pumps to Revolutionize Agriculture and Empower Rural SMEs

The National Economic Council (NEC) has given the nod for the large-scale deployment of solar-powered irrigation pumps designed by the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI). The initiative marks a bold step toward modernizing Nigeria’s agriculture while energizing rural enterprises and smallholder farmers.

For decades, farmers and agri-focused SMEs have grappled with high fuel costs, erratic electricity supply, and outdated irrigation systems—factors that have constrained yields, discouraged investment, and limited business growth. The newly approved solar irrigation technology is tailored to break these barriers, offering a reliable, affordable, and environmentally sustainable alternative to petrol-driven pumps.

By tapping into renewable energy, farmers can drastically cut operational expenses, expand their irrigable land, and achieve higher productivity. The pumps also double as backup power units for rural households and small businesses, bridging energy gaps in communities underserved by the grid.

Equipped with state-of-the-art features, NASENI’s pumps come with GPS-enabled tracking, mobile-accessible dashboards, water usage monitoring tools, and flexible pay-as-you-go financing models. These innovations not only promote efficiency but also lower entry barriers, enabling farmers and cooperatives to adopt modern irrigation without the upfront financial burden.

Experts believe the ripple effects will go far beyond farming. The rollout is expected to create a vibrant ecosystem of SMEs specializing in distribution, installation, after-sales servicing, and maintenance, generating employment and stimulating rural economies along the value chain.

NASENI’s Executive Vice Chairman and CEO, Khalil Suleiman Halilu, hailed the NEC’s decision as a turning point for Nigeria’s indigenous technology landscape. He emphasized that the pumps would reduce production costs, uplift rural livelihoods, and strengthen national food security.

Analysts add that the program will accelerate the penetration of renewable energy solutions in agriculture and showcase how locally developed innovations can directly address critical national challenges in food production and rural development. The nationwide rollout, they say, will serve as both a catalyst for agricultural transformation and a model for sustainable technology adoption in Nigeria’s growth agenda.
