The Federal Government of Nigeria has donated Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses to Plateau State in a move aimed at strengthening the state’s public transport system and improving mobility for small business operators.
This initiative is part of the Federal Government’s clean energy and transport reform programme under the Presidential CNG Initiative, which is focused on transitioning Nigeria’s transport sector from petrol and diesel to cleaner, locally sourced natural gas. The programme is expected to reduce operating costs, improve logistics efficiency, and enhance productivity for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) that depend heavily on transportation for their daily operations.
According to a statement from the presidency, the buses were locally manufactured by Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing (IVM), demonstrating the government’s commitment to promoting local production and reducing the nation’s reliance on imported vehicles. The donation is anticipated to significantly improve public transportation in Plateau, where high transport costs have long burdened traders, artisans, and small logistics operators.
The administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu emphasized that the CNG initiative is a key component of the “Renewed Hope” economic agenda, designed to mitigate the effects of increased transportation costs following the removal of fuel subsidies. As natural gas remains substantially cheaper than petrol, the introduction of CNG buses is expected to lower transport fares, enhance affordability for commuters, and enable small business owners to transport goods and services more efficiently across the state.

Experts believe the initiative has the potential to stimulate local commerce, boost productivity, and foster inclusive economic growth—provided that adequate support infrastructure, such as refuelling and maintenance stations, is developed. While CNG adoption has been growing in the southern parts of Nigeria, several northern states, including Plateau, are still in the process of establishing conversion centres and gas supply networks to sustain operations.
In addition to cost efficiency, the transition to CNG contributes to Nigeria’s climate objectives by reducing carbon emissions and promoting cleaner energy use within urban transport systems. The Federal Government has announced plans to replicate similar donations across the country to modernise public transport and accelerate the shift toward a green economy.
