Senator Adetokunbo Abiru Unveils 48 Cooperative Groups with N480m Funding to Support Local Enterprise Growth

Senator Adetokunbo Abiru, who represents the Lagos East Senatorial District, has inaugurated 48 newly formed cooperative societies, each granted N10 million as initial funding, amounting to a total of N480 million dedicated to uplifting women, farmers, artisans, and small-scale traders across the district. This major initiative—described as one of the most extensive empowerment programmes in Lagos East—also featured the distribution of starter equipment to nearly 2,000 residents and food packages to more than 12,000 families.

In a statement released by his media aide, Enitan Olukotun, it was noted that the N10 million allocated to each cooperative will enable members to consolidate resources, obtain affordable financing, and grow their businesses in a sustainable manner. Speaking at the launch, Senator Abiru stated, “Genuine empowerment goes beyond giving out temporary support. It is about helping people harness their potential, generate wealth, and make meaningful contributions to national development.”

Equipment distributed during the exercise included deep freezers, power generators, grinding machines, industrial sewing machines, and hair dryers, all aimed at increasing productivity and enhancing self-sufficiency among emerging and existing entrepreneurs.

Abiru, who leads the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance, and Other Financial Institutions, stressed that cooperative societies are vital instruments for grassroots economic empowerment, enabling individuals to enhance their credit profiles and scale their ventures.

Traditional rulers, political figures, and community stakeholders applauded the initiative, noting its significance for women, young people, and small businesses. Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, Chairman of the Lagos State APC, praised Abiru for championing progressive, citizen-centered programmes, while Deaconess Busola Isikalu, a market leader from Ikorodu, appreciated the senator’s efforts in creating avenues for economic liberation.

Overall, the programme aligns with a broader mission to uplift entrepreneurs, strengthen MSMEs, and promote lasting economic stability and development throughout Lagos East.
